Welcome to His People JoburgDear Visitors and Church Family, May God’s life, strength and presence be yours today. Encountering God: St. Gregory of Nyssa opposed the idea of pilgrimages to Jerusalem to encounter God because he said we could far more easily encounter God in our hearts. This is well put since the truth is that we encounter God by responding to Him with faith - through the Holy Spirit, through his love letters (the Bible) becoming alive to us and through times when the community gathers in worship. The early pilgrims desired to meet with God and although they went about it the hard way, their passion to seek and encounter God is to be modelled. The greatest encounter with God must be salvation. It is much more than the washing away of our sins; it is a way of life. Salvation is living more and more in harmony with God, a process that will go on forever. The rabbis called harmony with God olam haba which is "life in the world to come." Jesus gave us the greatest examples of how to encounter God through walking in obedience. His encounter with the Father at the time of His water baptism is an inspiration to us to follow in Jesus’ footsteps and be baptized in water too. It was at this baptism that the Father said, “This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased”. If you have not been water baptized then there is a glorious encounter with God awaiting you. Jesus’ instructions to the disciples to wait for the baptism of the Holy Spirit resulted in an awesome encounter with God’s power. We all need this encounter with God through His Holy Spirit, not once, but we should continually be filled with the Holy Spirit. God is calling us to meet with Him, to seek to encounter Him, and to help others encounter Him. Salvation, water baptism and the infilling of the Holy Spirit. If we can help you in any of these please speak to us. With love, The Pastoral team |
