UPDATE 3 JUNE - CALL to ACTION
3 June 2008
We have been overwhelmed by your awesome, unwavering and generous response to the current Xenophobic crisis. Thank you again and again for all you have done to alleviate the suffering of these precious souls. We commend you!
Following is a short update of our work with the people temporarily housed at Bramley police station and their current needs!
The Bramley site has been closed down and all the displacees have been moved. The ladies have been placed in a home in Albert Street in JHB central. The men were moved to a site in Corlette Gardens . We have moved all of the items purchased or donated for the displacees with them. The government has issued refugee status to everyone on site. The UN is running this camp and have opened the site for us to assist. About 300 men from the Alex police station have also been moved to the Corlett Gardens Camp.
We are busy planning skills development programmes for the displacees and are looking at finding employment for as many as possible as a long term view. If anyone could assist with either of these projects please contact Ps Derrick Moodley on 0837772081
NEEDS: The UN has taken responsibility for feeding the 400+ men on the site, so please do not drop food off at the church.
What we do need is Men’s Clothing; Bibles, Blankets and Books. If you can assist with this please drop your donations at the church office before 17h00 every day.
URGENT CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: MES who have been preparing and serving food at the Jeppe Police station desperately need volunteers to help their kitchen staff serve the food every day from 4pm. If you are able to assist please contact Ella on 0834193798.

UPDATE 3 JUNE - CALL to ACTION

POP - The Poverty Obliteration Project
God has challenged and inspired a few of us at HP to take on some of the National Giants by starting in our garden. Poverty is one of them, that we believe as the church, we have much to contribute towards bringing about Godly solutions that will be sustainable. As a result we would like to submit the following bold objective.
Strategic Objective
To empower and disciple Christians within the HP Joburg family so that within the next 2 to 3 years every member, who is prepared to submit to Biblical principles, will be empowered with the means and ability to increase their wealth such that they will be able to provide, at a minimum, suitable accommodation, food, clothing and healthcare for their families.
When God gives us tasks they are never easy but always achievable. We would like to invite those of you who would like to be part of helping us achieve this great objective to join us for a 4 hour workshop in which we will begin to outline the task, brain storm the critical processes, agree on the next steps and divide leadership responsibilities.
- Date: Saturday 7 June
- Time: 8am – 12pm, Saturday 7 June
- Venue: The Green Room (2nd Floor HP Parktown)

UPDATE 22 MAY - CALL to ACTION
22 May 2008
THE CITY WE LOVE
The people of HP Joburg share a common vision to be the hands and heart of Christ to the City of Gold. Now more than at any other time we are called to bring the Kingdom to our city, to be the hands and heart of Christ to people who are suffering violence and injustice. We continue to speak in a clear voice that we stand for zero-tolerance of oppression of all the vulnerable peoples in our nation: the orphan, the widow and most particularly in this crisis, the alien.
“When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born.” Leviticus 19:33-34
AS A CHURCH WE:
- Have dramatically increased our compassion capacity with members donating goods of all kinds for this crisis and delivered truckloads of goods to affected areas.
- Have visited police stations and schools to consult with local leader.
- Are working with a city church forum as well as the Center for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR), taking a role in planning for crisis management and for provision of basic needs.
- Have taken teams to schools in one of the worst affected centers of violence to speak on reconciliation, to distribute food, to pray and to counsel with those traumatized by violence. A total of four schools and assemblies have been ministered to.
- Are assisting displaced families. Members of the church have opened their homes to those escaping the violence.
- Have sent volunteers to our Homes and Shelter as staff have been unable or afraid to travel to work.
- Are meeting with displaced people desperate for accommodation and are considering the viability of housing them onsite or in homes within our community.
- Joined in public demonstrations on campus in support of those suffering injustice.
HOW CAN YOU HELP TODAY?
- Bring Blankets, non-perishable food, toiletries, baby formula, nappies, blankets and warm coats. [Donations should be brought to the church offices before 3 pm each day for delivery that evening. 20 Seventh Avenue / Parktown North].
- Make a donation through our Charitable Trust:
Masiphane Projects
Bank: Nedbank Branch Code: 19770517 Account number: 1977063241 Ref: Crisis Donations
- Volunteer to help distribute, call Colyn James (082 600 4488).
- Consider offering accommodation for the displaced, call Gail Musikavanhu (082 853 6372).
- Employees at our ‘homes’ have been drastically affected. Please contact Caroline Webb (082-324-1794) or Sheila Rowe (074 104 2945), if can volunteer to help in our homes or shelter.
- PRAY for those affected by the violence and for our nation.
- Ask your friends to do all of the above! Feel free to forward this letter to them.
“For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance …will arise from another place… But who knows but that you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?" Esther 4:14
CALL to ACTION
20 May 2008
We, the His People Christian Church Joburg are deeply concerned with the current state of the nation with the on-going xenophobic attacks. The Biblical perspective on the foreigners/aliens is as follows: We believe that we are all created in God’s image according to Genesis 1:27. God values everyone and therefore we should value the life of everyone as important, because we are all equal before God. The Bible also teaches that we are all foreigners on earth because we have an eternal home in heaven. Ephesians 2:12-13 “ remember that … you were… foreigners …” The Bible clearly states the social responsibility that is upon all not to mistreat aliens/foreigners, especially because we understand that we are all foreigners. Exodus 20:21-22 " Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt.” Finally, we believe God’s love for us and for all the people compels us to act in manner of showing compassion and love to all foreigners. Leviticus 19:33-34 “ When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.” What can we do?
- Families and individuals in our church to donate blankets
- Give bread and tinned food
- Monetary donations- please use the following banking details:

Bank: Nedbank Branch Code: 19770517 Account number: 1977063241

- Employees at our ‘homes’ have been drastically affected. Please contact David Webb (082 656 3777) or Sheila Rowe (074 104 2945), if can volunteer to help in our orphanages, etc.
- Please continue to pray for those affected by the violence and for our nation.
Donations of food and blankets should be brought to the church offices before 3pm each day for delivery that evening. 20 Seventh Avenue, Parktown North
We are urging you to dig deeply into this opportunity to give; this is our chance to show how serious we are about transforming our nation and being salt and light to the world. |
